The industrial, university, and business centre of the region nouriches its green soul on the hill Marjan situated in the westernmost part of the peninsula. Its forested park infringed by the city and the sea offers pleasant walks away from the city noise under the pines by the sea.

Split is situated at the foot of Marjan hill. Marjan was first mentioned in writing in the 18th century as Marianum, and over time its name changed. Today its known as Marjan, although older residents of the city still call it Merjan. Marjan is also a peninsula and forest park, which makes it a popular destination for recreation in Split. Walking, jogging and cycling are the main activities here, and its slopes have coves that uncover one of the most popular beaches in Split. A typical stroll around Marjan begins at the Gates, and continues to Bene. From Bene, you can go to the lookout, and further up to the zoo or the highest point of Marjan – Telegrin.
